Reverse post

Okay. So usually I post after the Sunday night teaching. This time I want to post before. This weekend we're talking about Genesis 6 (skipping 5 b/c it's mostly genealogy). What do you make of that stuff? It's certainly not one you're going to hear preached on most mornings in most churches. Obviously the Noah stuff we've heard before, but the first section? There are LOTS of varied thoughts on this one. What are yours?

Thoughts? Please??

Okay, a couple of my favorite thoughts... since you asked.

Since the fall, Genesis is about the downward spiral of humanity. Things get worse and worse. Then, Genesis 6:11 “Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.”

With Cain, we saw sin get "deeper." More intense. Now it gets wider... the writer talks about the whole earth being corrupt. "All the people.." etc.

Also, it's interesting that in verse 12 it says, “And God saw…” This is the first time that phrase has been used since Genesis 1 (same wording as the “And God saw it was good”. But now it says, “And God saw it was corrupt and full of violence.” God saw all that was so good was now ruined.

Also notice that even here we get the hint that God isn’t the author of sin…it’s not God’s fault. Rather our free will has authored sin…”all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.”

This is why verse 8 jumps out at you. “But Noah walked with God.” Kind of like 5:24 with Enoch... there’s this one bright spot on the earth.

It seems to me I have actually taught on the Nephilim -- but I can't for the life of me remember it and my spotlight isn't working! It seems the phrase "sons of God and daugthers of men" is very specific... but I can't remember. You might know... and I will listen to your podcast... and then I will! :P
