I don't know what God wants to do, or is going to do, in and through the life of this fledgling community that is called Journey. I have visions sometimes of what could be, and I just pray that they are a part of what God is thinking. We so desperately want others to experience Jesus in a way that connects with their life on a very real level. We want to reach those who are burnt out on church or burnt BY the church and just don't like the church. We want to be a home and a community for those that have not felt loved by Christians. I think God knows our heart and is going to break something wide open . I just don't know what yet. I can't wait to see.
Ephesians 3:14-20, "14For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. I don't know what God is doing most of the time either.... that is a good thing. Most of the time we see God in the rear-view mirror. I CAN tell you that, from what I discern, what you are doing sounds like something Jesus would do if he moved into the neighborhood. It sounds like what God is doing in fresh ways in other places...
My encouragement to you: don't confuse God doing something big with doing something that this world or your colleagues would call big. I know that temptation. I think how we measure greatness is changing. "Success" will be less about nickels and noses and more about impact. Less about how many are at your meeting and more about the number of conversations you all have the day after your meeting.
I'm sure you have heard the idea before: If Jesus moves into the neighborhood, things get better. So I ask you and your readers: If the Journey were to disappear tomorrow, who would protest? The kinds of people that would complain say a lot about the kind of community you are becoming and the kinds of needs you are meeting... and the kind of Jesus you are showing your neighborhood.
Don't know if you've thought about this blog entry for awhile. On the day of this post, you were talking about river bends and that you felt like something big was going to happen. Don't know if that was big-good or big-bad. But did you notice that this was written about 3 and a half weeks before the big Findlay flood of 2007? Hmm...
